Understanding Garage Door Warranties
When investing in a new garage door or opener, understanding the warranty is critical. Here's what to look for:
Types of Warranties:
1. Manufacturer Warranty — Covers defects in materials and workmanship. Most steel doors carry a limited lifetime warranty on panels (against rust through), 1-5 years on hardware.
2. Opener Warranty — Most quality openers carry 1-3 years on the motor, some with lifetime warranties (LiftMaster's better models).
3. Labor Warranty — Separate from manufacturer warranty. Ask what the installer covers if there's an installation issue. We provide a 1-year labor warranty.
What Voids Warranties:
- DIY installation
- Unauthorized modifications
- Failure to maintain (some manufacturers require documented maintenance)
What to Ask:
- Is this a limited or full warranty?
- What's covered and what's not?
- How do I file a claim?
- Who performs warranty repairs — the manufacturer or the installer?
Always get warranty terms in writing before signing anything.
