What's the Right Garage Door Size for Your Home?
Getting the size right is critical when ordering a new garage door. Here's what you need to know:
Standard Single Car Door Sizes:
- 8x7 feet (most common for older homes)
- 9x7 feet (fits most modern single-car garages)
- 10x7 or 10x8 feet (oversized single)
Standard Double Car Door Sizes:
- 16x7 feet (most common double car)
- 18x7 feet
- 16x8 feet (taller option for SUVs and trucks)
RV and Oversized:
- 18x8, 20x8, or custom sizes available
How to Measure:
1. Measure the width of the opening from inside edge to inside edge
2. Measure the height from the floor to the top of the opening
3. Measure headroom (space between top of opening and ceiling) — minimum 10-12 inches needed for standard openers
4. Measure the depth of the garage — you need at least the door height in depth for the door to retract
When in doubt, our team will measure everything during a free estimate visit.
