The Importance of Garage Door Balance Testing
A balanced garage door is one where the springs do most of the work — not the opener. An unbalanced door strains the opener motor and can fail prematurely.
How to Test Balance:
1. Close the garage door fully
2. Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the opener
3. Manually lift the door to waist height (about 3-4 feet)
4. Let go — a balanced door will stay in place or move very slightly
5. A door that slams to the ground or rockets up is unbalanced
What Causes Imbalance:
- Springs are worn and losing tension
- Springs are incorrectly sized for the door weight
- One spring has broken
- Tracks are misaligned
Why It Matters:
- An unbalanced door causes the opener to work 2-3x harder
- Shortens opener lifespan significantly
- Can cause the door to fall unexpectedly
- Creates safety hazards
If your door fails the balance test, call us for a spring adjustment or replacement. It's a quick fix that protects your entire system.
