How to Lubricate Your Garage Door (The Right Way)
Lubricating your garage door takes about 10 minutes and can significantly extend its lifespan. Here's exactly how to do it:
What You Need:
- White lithium grease or silicone-based spray (NOT WD-40)
- A rag or paper towels
What to Lubricate:
1. Hinges — Spray or apply grease to each hinge pivot point
2. Rollers — Apply to the bearings, not the track itself
3. Torsion spring — A thin coat along the coils
4. Top of the rail — Where the trolley slides
5. Arm bar and lock bar
What NOT to Lubricate:
- The tracks (grease in tracks collects debris)
- Nylon rollers (they don't need it)
Do this every 6 months, or when you notice squeaking. It's that simple.
