Garage Door Track Problems: Signs, Causes, and Fixes
The tracks guide your garage door rollers through the full range of motion. When tracks are damaged or misaligned, the door can stop working entirely.
Signs of Track Problems:
- Door makes a rubbing or scraping noise
- Door moves unevenly or at an angle
- Door stops partway through opening or closing
- Visible gaps between rollers and track
- Visible dents or bends in the track
Common Causes:
1. Impact damage — A car bumping the door is the most common cause of bent tracks
2. Loose mounting hardware — Tracks mounted to the wall can loosen over time and shift
3. Worn rollers — Rollers that have worn unevenly can damage the track surface
4. Water damage — Rust and corrosion weaken track walls
What You Can (and Can't) Do:
- Minor misalignment can sometimes be corrected by loosening mounting brackets and tapping gently into position
- Bent or dented track sections must be replaced — don't try to bend them back
- If the track is severely damaged, the entire track assembly may need replacement
Do not operate a door with a damaged track — the rollers can jump the track and the door can fall.
