Garage Door Rust: How to Prevent and Treat It

If you live in or near Ocean County, NJ, salt air accelerates rust on steel garage doors significantly. Here's how to deal with it: Prevention: 1. Rinse the door with fresh water regularly if you're near the coast 2. Apply a coat of car wax twice a year — it creates a barrier against moisture and salt 3. Touch up paint chips immediately — bare metal rusts fast 4. Choose a door with a galvanized steel inner layer 5. Consider an aluminum or fiberglass door if you're very close to the ocean Treatment (Light Surface Rust): 1. Sand the area with 80-grit sandpaper 2. Clean with a rust remover product 3. Apply a rust-inhibiting primer 4. Paint with exterior metal paint matching your door color 5. Seal with a clear coat Treatment (Heavy Rust): If rust has eaten through the metal or compromised structural integrity, panel replacement is needed. Don't Wait: Rust spreads. A small spot treated today stays small. Left alone, it spreads to adjacent panels and eventually requires door replacement.
