Garage Door Panels: Repair vs. Replace?

A dented or cracked garage door panel is one of the most common types of damage we see. Here's how to decide what to do: Repair When: - The damage is cosmetic only (small dent or scratch) - The door is relatively new (under 5 years) - Replacement panels for your door model are still available - The structural integrity of the door isn't compromised - The cost of panel replacement is significantly less than a new door Replace the Door When: - Multiple panels are damaged - The door is older and a matching panel isn't available - The frame or tracks are also bent - The total panel cost approaches 50% or more of a new door - You want a style upgrade anyway DIY Dent Repair: For minor dents on steel doors, some homeowners use a hair dryer and canned air technique: 1. Heat the dent with a hair dryer 2. Quickly spray compressed air (upside down) on the heated metal 3. The rapid temperature change can sometimes pop the dent out This works sometimes for shallow dents. For significant damage, always call a professional.
